Nara Low table

While at one of my wood dealers, I spotted a small stack of about thirty dirty looking, knotty boards. What caught my eye was the "live edge" on one side of each board. These Nara (Japanese Oak) boards are from Northern Japan (Hokkaido).
I struck a deal, for just three boards, they were dirty and I wasn't too sure about them.
Anyway, I ran them over the jointer and through the planer, and thought I'd make a low table and see how it comes out.

Here's what I finished up with. I kept the base simple, in keeping with the natural look top.

Mmmm. That would look really beautiful in my house. :)

Great find, Okami. I'm certain that the wood is very pleased to have been discovered and put to such great use.

When I was in Japan, I loved the low natural edge tables. Many I saw had pretty thick almost 'bar top' coatings on them; yours looks nice and natural... very nice.

Hi Kev, I sprayed a 50% shine urethane on it. It's a Japanese brand (Osaka paints ). A good company, when I was looking for a finish for tables last year, they sent me a lot of free samples, and they know their products well.

Thanks Potosan!
These black with dirt , old boards get over looked by most, I was lucky to stumble upon them. I like old knotty boards, they have a very natural feel.
If I can sell this table, I think i'll go and buy the other 25 or so boards

Yes, sometimes table tops get plastic like coatings on them, especially in busy izakaya's where they get abused daily.

Nice job! How do you clamp up the table top while the glue sets up without destroying that nice natural edge?
