Default Just in the Nick of time - a present for Joon

Yesterday I finally figured out that I forgot to get Christmas gift for my wife. and I had no idea what to get so I started looking thru some of my wood piles. and a day later here it is.

Sorry for the awful pics, bad light plus my only camera right now is my Droid phone.

I would have got it done faster but:
I cut all the accent parts out of wenge then changed my mind and cut them out os some figured purpleheart, changed my mind again and starred at cherry scraps and finally settled on some strips of Chechen. Plus I've never made a box so I had to make the spline jig for the bandsaw. and make a quick and dirty miter shooting board(see below)

Tools used:
Bandsaw, Kapex (dull blade), ets150, jointer/planer.

Ive still got to get some hinges for the lid and put another coat of oil on today.

It's beautiful, she'll think that you planned it for weeks...

Ha ha, you, too? I just flushed and polished the brass for this table (thanks to all the suggestions; worked great!)

Gonna pick up a couple presents now while the epoxy firms up then put a coat of varnish on it; it's already sealed with CPES so the varnish is just to set the sheen.

For me, being stupid and rushing combined to make a couple mistakes that took time to fix. One is visible a bit but is on the back. Still, stupid. grr.

Anyway, off to shopping. I'll post a picture later (from the front only!)

I love the quilted maple you have for that box; amazing depth. Looks like fluffy clouds. I like your eventual choice in spline material. Chechen has a nice character.

Lovely, Eiji. You did a great job with the splines.

Will it be filled with jewelry?

Good save Eiji!

Nice work for short notice and the maple is awesome.
I don't like the other wood though.
The grain is too busy and detracts from the maple.
I think some rosewood would have been about perfect.

I think the purpleheart would have been nice too.
Why did you reject it?

Beautiful - she'll LOVE it!

Count me in as another quilted maple fan.
And what you did with it is just lovely.

Merry Christmas, Joon!!!

Perhaps it be best to choose another word when you are describing to your lovely wife your process of selecting the perfect wood to use in commissioning the beauty that she deserves -- say selected from 100's that just weren't worthy...

Installed the hinges and got a better shot of the grain.

Wow, great job. Gonna have to get me some of that maple. The jewelry will likely be outclassed by the box.
