Default Cherry & Ambrosia Maple Small Wall Cabinet

As I have this weekend off I figured I would go ahead and basically make a small mock up of my future project(kitchen cabinets). This small wall cabinet will be used to store all my gear that I have to take off my belt when I get home from work, along with my badge.

I have sucessfully negotiated the academy and will be graduated on tuesday. Once completed I am hoping to have more time for the shop.

This cabinet is made of Cherry and ambrosia maple. My kitchen cabinets will be the same cherry but the maple will be bookmatched spalted instead of ambrosia. Since I had some ambrosia about and did not want to spare my limited spalted maple I figured I would give it a go. This is my first time using this type of maple and I think it is nice. The doors are simple mission style doors and the panel is just shy of 1/2 inch bookmatched.

I turned the knobs out of cocobola since my kitchen cabinets will have ebony turned knobs. I have limited ebony so I just expirmented with some type of design off the top of my head. I showed a pic of the cocobolo just sanded then with a coat of wax.

Well I see youre back in the shop. Nice looking doors too.

Im well known for giving my opinion good or bad so here it is. The knobs seem much too large for the doors. They look nice just about a 1/3 bigger and taller than I would have chosen. Ive ever been near a lathe, actually I looked at one once. Just my opinion on the asthetic view.

I agree with Eiji on that one. I'd go for more slender knobs, and smaller diameter in relation to the rails and stiles. Otherwise, lovely doors, Anthony.

And congratulations on graduating from the academy. Was it just like the movies?

This has been bugging me since I looked at the pics. Since I got such a shellac'n on another thread I be careful with my wording.

The Joinery, on the doors, needs work and wouldn't pass muster in my shop.
I can't tell but it looks there are gaps or misalignment in the stile/rail connections. If it were me I would pick up some poplar and work that out before touching another piece of cherry.

Eiji - I agree there does seem to be some misalignment but can't tell from the photos weather there is a slight gap, a slight twist or the rail and stile are not quite the same height. How were they joined?

The other thing I would suggest is that the more flat sawn appearing stiles should both be on the outside or both be on inside.

When I make cherry doors I buy 12/4 stock and rip it to make all quartersawn stiles and rails. That way they don't take away from what should be interesting...the panel.
