Short story:

My kayak building guru throws almost nothing away. A whole back his carpenter friend helped him re-trim his garage. While they were pulling off the old trim he stacked it up behind his workshop. The friend chided him about it. As payment for helping with the garage, said boatbuilder did a skin-on-frame workshop in which the friend built a boat gratis. The keel, stringers, deck braces, etc. for his boat were special. Yup. The salvaged wood from the garage. He didn't know it until he had finished the frame.
