I am such a wood hoarder. I cant seem to throw it out. The thin rips say I can be a bread board someday or cut me into dominoes. shorts can be all sorts! Yikes
I need help! I know Im not going to use it all either. My glue ups have to match just so...but even still I cant seem to get rid of them

Timely... after finishing a bunch of small nagging projects, I sorted the off-cut bins today into 2 wastebaskets of burnables and 2 milk crates of keepers.
Then, while mounting some bracing on a wall, I ended up using 3 off-cuts from the fire pile. Never fails. But I'll still plan on burning them. Kinda need to out here; with wind chill, Phoenix sometimes gets down to 58... Since cleaning out the off-cut part of the garage (well, it's where they migrate when they fly west after off-cutting), I put 2 milk crates on casters under the bench. I want to keep the off-cuts to those bins only and sort when they overflow. Otherwise, it's nuts.

I do have a box under my chop saw for kindling scraps. That seems to help with the real small pieces. That box then goes right upstairs next to the stove. Of course I've pulled some pieces of nicely colored spruce out of the burn pile to take over to a friends shop who has a band saw. Now I'll be collecting nicely colored pieces of scrap!!!

An off-cut has to be really useless for me to throw it out so I've got lots of stuff in all sizes. The containers I use to organize small scraps graduate from coffee cans to large oatmeal cans to appropriately sized cardboard boxes. For longer narrower stock I use FedEx large mailing tubes which are triangular and can easily be moved in a bunch when nested and strapped or banded together. However, most of the cut down stock is stored in the very handy boxes McMaster-Carr uses to ship rods, tubes, and extrusion. Every now and then I'll order something just to get the box.
When I run out of "wasted space" in which to store containers of scraps I winnow down replacing the marginal stuff with the better stuff. Last edited by MichaelKellough; 01-25-2010 at 04:24 PM. |
