I was thinking that the "Z" axis was going to be very limited- can't really shove a router into something that is sticking up.

As an only 2D device, I'm thinking that it won't have enough value...

My biggest concern is that they just stuck it all in boxes somewhere like a garage or basement and if and when they decide to use or sell them, they will have rusted badly and be worthless.

Web site says 100 were made- I played around with mine a bit and wasn't sure how well it would cut a parallel line with such a small reference flat and the handle location. It is gorgeous though!

Using any kind of wood filler is going to be a mistake. Your best best is to fix the gap; looking at your picture, I would probably cut off that section of top and edge...
