My thoughts, exactly. I have a large variety of hardwood "shorts" left over from years of furniture building, and only had to dip into new lumber for a few bases and backboards.

Leg attachment to the frame was done with two 4" hanger bolts on each leg. One of the photos shows the attachment in detail of the corner of the frame to its leg. These hanger bolts were 3/8"...

If you get a good beaver hair brush, you can brush shellac on, and then rub it out when fully dried. Of course, French Polish is hard to beat for fine furniture.
