Default Pictures dissappear from CF card!?

Never had this problem before. Shot a group of photos as usual (jpg only).
Reviewed them in the camera (Olympus E-330, the first with Live View),
deleting a few and continued shooting, reviewing and editing in camera and all seemed fine.

Put the CF card in the computer and none of that sessions pictures were there.
(The missing pictures don't show up when the card is in the camera either.)
Put the CF card back in the camera and made a test shot, put the card in the
computer and it (that test shot) shows up just fine.

So, a couple of hours of work is gone. What could have happened?

M,

Have you checked your memory in your computer?
I know this is a pretty basic reply, but a similar thing happened to me when I downloaded "irreplaceable" moments of a family reunion with newly found relatives abroad.

I could see them in the camera view port but when I downloaded them into my external hard-drive which had plenty of file space only half of them showed up. My heart sank as I thought that some how the camera card became corrupted. Upon further investigation I realized that I had skipped the step of directing the files to my iphoto in the external hard-drive, so instead the photos were being downloaded into my i-photo in my hard-drive in my computer itself,,,,, which was low in memory because of the file size of the photos I took.

Needless to say I was very relieved.

My problem is way more basic than that.
The pictures don't show up in the directory of the CF card.

The file numbering process in this camera is different for jpgs and raw files (orfs in the case of RAW files) and they also vary with date and quantity so these pictures should have been in the middle of the directory, and they were while the card was in the camera, but they disappeared after removing the card from the camera.

Are you using CF card reader? If so it may be bad, I just had the same problem and I replaced my reader and it has worked flawlessly. I had taken test pictures also and it would work fine as long as I only took a couple of pictures.

Just a wild shot in the dark, but does your camera have a built-in memory separate from the removable card? If so, have you checked this memory by turning on the camera without the removable memory installed? I have found many lost pictures there when I forget to install the memory card, but then later install it for other pictures. This memory is accessible only when the external memory is not installed.

I briefly hoped it was something like that Rick. This camera can use both CF and XD cards simultaneously so I hoped it had written to the XD card (without me requesting that) but no, there was no XD card and there is no internal memory in this camera.

I'm going to try to find some file recovery software.

I have used image recovery software to save images I had deleted by mistake. It worked great, as long as you have not overwritten them. After you recover your files, reformat the card in your camera and see if this helps in the future.

I suppose another question might be, why were you deleting pictures as you went? Why not just leave them and get rid of them later? It's (supposedly) the big advantage of digital cameras. Maybe spend $20 and get more memory for next time?

(Sorry - that sounded rude. I didn't mean it that way )
