(Sorry - that sounded rude. I didn't mean it that way )
I was shooting many pictures of the same thing with subtle differences in composition, angle and height of camera, light (a huge range in light alone), color balance, depth of field, etc. It's best to weed them out as soon as I know a particular combination is unsuccessful because....just because.

Isn't the whole idea of "weeding" to leave the wanted "plants" behind.

Yep! The weird thing is the whole garden disappeared. But, the yard was still there...

Someone at DPReview suggested a free recovery app from Lexar, Image Rescue 3. I gave it a try a couple of times and it always hangs at about (I'm guessing) where the problem files begin.

I might try a different app...PhotoRPhotoRec - CGSecurityec.

I agree with Peter (even though we all know he is a closet bully). I take a lot of bracket shots and otherwise redundant shots. Not only do I never delete a picture from the camera until it gets moved onto the computer, but I don't even delete the garbage over/under exposed shots--I move them into a separate directory. Why risk deleting the wrong picture while looking at a tiny LCD when it is far safer when you can weed out the bad shots on a regular computer screen?

Frankly my camera is a lot faster at paging through pictures than my computer. The camera allows plenty of "zoom" to see the details I'm interested in and at that stage the parameters are still fresh in my mind. It's a better work flow for me and I never had a problem before.

I think the formatting on your card is FUBAR. You will probably not be able to recover anything if this is the case. I'd format the card, take a bunch of trash pix and delete some, then see if it is working properly. If it is not, I'd trash the card or send it back to the manufacturer to see if they'd warrantee it.

I agree with WW. I've had cards just go bad on me--not very often, years between problems, but it can happen.

Probably. If I have time I'll try to recover. Otherwise I'll wait reformat the card etc. and wait for the sun to return.
