By the way, Laurie. When Gillian saw your signature line she said, "Hey! Laurie's got an abacus! Just like me!"

Unfortunately it's just about as effective at helping her with her math homework as I am. It sure is hard to teach your own kid. I can teach anyone else's kid math. I teach calculus all the time. But fractions to your own daughter? All hell breaks loose!

Surely I'm not the only one?

Did you know that it's possible to solve cube roots on an abacus? Here's how!

(And no, I haven't tried.)

Wow, who knew? Actually, I guess about 600 million Chinese knew.
