Default Fiddle Back Blackwood

Hi all,

Yesterday I went for the trek to Dandenong and acquired some Fiddleback Tasmanian Blackwood. Usually you can find one board in a rack which has some light figure but not to this degree. It has been wet with Mineral Spirit for the photo shoot (Vain timber it is).
I have been approached by a man in Sydney to make a Watch Collection Box, to hold about 10 watches.
I thought that maybe some figured Jarrah or Red Gum would look good with it, or perhaps panels on all sides and the top bordered by "ordinary" Tassie Blackwood.
What do you all think?
Pic 1: Is "plain" Blackwood
Pic 2: Is the Fiddleback
Pic 3: Is the Fiddleback with the Jarrah
Pic 4: Is the Fiddleback with the Red Gum.

Regards,

Rob

That fiddleback is some beautiful stuff! Will you have enough left over to make a fiddle?

I don't know, Rob. If I had to choose one to go with the fiddleback, I'd probably go with the standard Blackwood.

Hi Okami,

Yes, I thought similarly, however the client chose Jarrah, with Birds eye Huon Pine for the trays. So Jarrah for the box itself and a lid panel, with the Fiddleback Blackwood as a border for the lid.

Here's a pic of the three of them, planed and wet with Mineral Spirit. I actually think the contrast is very good.

Regards,

Rob

Rob,

I am afraid that I was with everyone else in that the fiddle back by itself or with some of the plain blackwood and that too me it would have been sheer class. However, client's have the final say and that is all that matters, plus I think the Jarrah and the Huon Pine do make a nice contrast though perhaps just one of them instead of both.

This would be a sheer waste of wood unless you had another use for it but what about making a second box with the fiddle back and plain blackwood so that your client could see the difference.

What kind of price do you charge for a box like this? Who knows, maybe if your client does not like the fiddle back/plain blackwood box one of us might.

Hi Fred,

The option of making a second box is a good one. The only thing is that the box will have compartments suitable for 4" x 4" display pillows and will be large enough to take a large Fob watch!! This will make the box about 350mm ( about 14") long and about 250mm (10") wide. Quite a large beast.
For a box this size I charge AUS$400.00 plus postage. But you're right, it would be spectacular. I'll think upon it. I still have to finish a small Red Gum Entertainment Unit and I can't make final measurements for the box until the pillows arrive.

Regards,

Rob

Hey Rob,

I did not realize the box was quite that large so it may not work out well. That is a shame as I really believe that the fiddle back plus plain blackwood would be spectacular. Ah well, just another pipe dream down the pipe.
