Woodworm,
Welcome aboard! The TS55 and OF1400 are excellent choices. The Domino is both excellent and unique. All three make me look good on a regular basis (given my modest woodworking skills). Regarding which Domino to buy, I can't comment because I don't know much about the new one. Perhaps Rick or one of our European members can provide us with enlightenment. Best regards, Dan.

Hi Woodworm, welcome!
I have the old pins Domino. I think the only reason Festool went to the plastic paddles is because the pins were pretty much the same as Mafell's dowler, and they were none too pleased. Which ever one You go for, You won't regret it. The Domino is outstanding Cheers! Okami |

I tend to use pencil lines to align the Domino so it doesn't matter to me but the paddles won't fit (register) into exsisting mortises. Neither the paddles or the current 5mm pins will register in the 4mm mortises. Using the alignment sight with a pencil or knife line is the most prescise method of alignment.

Without knowing the cost of the new version...
It will be nice to have the 4mm bit but you can add that to an "old" kit. I've never used the pins for registration. Pushing round steel pins against the sides of holes in wood is not a reliable procedure. It will work (up to a point) if you use the wider mortises but I prefer to strike marks. If I where in a production environment I'd probably use it. Can't say which is better, pins or paddles. For the first mortise, registering from the face edge of a board, I guess I'd prefer the paddle since it won't mar the wood. But, how does the paddle fit into an existing mortise? Anyone have one? |

Thanks for all the information, I can see being a member of this community is going to be really useful. I think that I will probably go for the newest model and there are some good deals about at the moment. If you buy the domino with an extractor you get the all the cutters and dominos in a sortainer as a freebie.
Now what can I sell on Ebay to fund it? Last edited by woodworm; 07-21-2009 at 08:40 PM. |
