Default Screws, Square, Torx, brand, features?

Hi,

I am trying to simplify and have one type for everything. It is a contest between the Robertson and Torx.

It is nice that square drives will "stick" to the bit. But I find it highly irratating when they "lock in " when driving, and you have to rotate the drill to pull the bit out. Or when yo pull the drill out the bit comes out of the holder and stays in the screw. I also find it bothersome to get the bit into a pocket hole screw if it slipped while in a pocket where you can't see it. I have used some star drives for a few things and I like them.

Other pros and cons?

Torx/Star are the best and are the future. It's a shame it took so long for Robertson/square to catch.

I wouldn't completely abandon Robertson though. As Rick pointed out in another related thread you can stick a Robertson screw on a non-magnetic driver and it will stay. Some Torx will too.

Torx are the best. I would use them exclusively if I could.

Torx are the best. I've used a lot from Screw-products (Screw Products, Inc Stainless Steel, ACQ Compatible and Interior Multipurpose Use "Star Drive" Wood Screws, Composite Deck Screws, Decking Products & More!), GRK, and a couple of other manufacturers.

I use square drive screws for pocket-hole work, Phillips for drywall, and wouldn't touch a slot screw unless absolutely necessary.

Regards,

Dan.

I'm a square drive fan.

I sing the praises of GRK regularly
Square aint bad
Sometimes I specifically want brass slots for projects. Darn hard to get anymore, unless you want to spend 60 cents a piece at Ace
I went to McFeeleys to get asst packs and even they are selling them off as "dead inventory" that they will not be replacing. Certainly not popular.
My 3 all time favorites though, GRK trimheads, GRK structural, and Fastcap cabinet screws with the enormous washer head.

Try Lee Valley for Brass Screws and hardware. I know it's not as easy as driving to the local store, but they have a good selection of hardware, and quality hand tools.

FWIW:
Robertson are available in Europe but they are a rarity. Torx are my preference but if you can't get good straight on access to the screwhead - even with a festool drill and all its attachments , pozidrive gives you more flexibility - Wiha make special bits that allow you to drive a screw from an angle whilst reducing the risk of stripping the head. Of course in an ideal world you'll always have good access to the screw head.... The other thing for me is that when using large quantities of screws, Torx headed ones work out significantly more expensive over here than equivalent pozi ones.

Hi,

I have had a chance to use several of the GRK screws now. And I like them .. ..... a lot. The R4, Pan heads ( pocket screws) , and Cabinet screws. They are straight, countersink, and drill well. The all purpose coating is nice too.

I like the R4 head size too. It is a bit smaller than many most other general purpose wood screws.

We used Wurth pozidrive torx self drilling & countersinking screws in Lebanon. They worked great, a pecial bit is necessary and you have to be careful about too much torque; they will countersink clear through Chinese plywoood.
