Default Two new tools

Laurie and Gentlemen,

Yesterday and today I received two new tools. By this I mean new to me in one case and truly new in the other.

In order of receiving them, yesterday I received a Stanley #78 Duplex Fillister and Rabbet Plane from our very own forumMFG. David so very kindly found this plane and sent it to me. From the pictures you will be able to see that the duplex portion is called that because the blade and lever cap can either be set in the rabbet area or further up the plane where it turns it into a bullnose plane. It is a Fillister because it has a fence, depth stop and nicker. Really a wonderful plane and cuts wonderful rabbets.

The second tool arrived today and it is a 14 inch Sash Saw from Mark Harrell of Bad Axe. Try saying Sash Saw quickly just once much less five times. As you will see from the pictures Mark has done a tremendous job on the bling part of the saw. I have his very FIRST blued split nuts on the handle as well as a gun blued hardback. It is a really beautiful saw and cuts like a hot knife through buttah. Mark also has another great touch and that is he has wooden tooth guards. As a final touch, we found out yesterday, that Philip's booth, number 204, is going to be between Bad Axe and Blum Tools at the WIA.

All in all two wonderful tools in two purty darn good days. I hope that you all enjoy the pics even though a few are not so good.

Fred

Great old plane Fred, I love seeing old tools get put back into useful service. The sash saw is great also.

Ron,

Thank you very much. I have to say that I had a great time flattening the back of the blade and then sharpening it as well as touching up the cap iron. It has a very thin 1/8 inch blade but by flatting the cap iron and allowing it to truly stiffen the blade the iron cuts amazingly well. It will be interesting to see how the edge holds up. It also has a very interesting adjuster that moves the blade by catching a series of grooves. So the blade moves up or down by either pushing down on the lever or pushing up.

I was just making some cuts with the saw and at least initially it was very easy to start the forward cut after running the blade backward with a very short stroke. It is also quite stiff and very easily holds it line.

Again with both of these tools I need to do a lot more work to really be able to say how well they work. But I can say my initial impression of both is very good.

Fred

Fun new toys, Fred. Congratulations. With the moving filibuster plane can you only cut rabbets on one side of a board? Do you need a left-handed plane for the other side?

Love that saw. Sweeet!

Just the one plane but I can cut on all four sides with it. I just have to go around the board in the one direction. I just sharpened up the nicker with a file and that baby is sharp and really good. The saw is sweeeeeeettttt.

Very cool Fred You seem to have new tools arriving almost by the day
Your bench is bursting at the dovetails with hand tools
If You ever get bored with any of them, send them this way please
Now, where's this new tools cabinet(s)

Cheers!

Fred,

How does that saw compare to a saw from Andrew Lunn at Eccentric Tool Works?

Okami,

Who has time to build a tool cabinet? I am too busy unpacking my new tools. Plus since I could never build anything has gorgeous as what you build, I keep waiting for an Okami speacial to suddenly show up from Japan.

Eco, thank you very much. David, it does not compare to Andrew's saws but then in my opinion no saw out there anywhere compares. Now given that I will say that Mark's saws are still far better than ordinary and worth every penny and more. His saws easily give the Lie-Nielsen, Grammercy, Wentzloff saws a run for their money. In addition and one thing that I really like is the ability to have your saw blinged out with the many options that Mark offers and in this area I do not know of anyone that is close to him. So, all in all, I would say that you could not possibly go wrong by ordering one of Mark's saws.
