Ebony makes a handsome head

So... what was your son up to?
Last time we saw him he was wielding a wooden sword.

Thats beautiful Eiji! If I could swing it right now, I absolutely would buy one. What is the size of the head?
Your daughter is adorable. How old is she? Aren't daughters the best? I am definitely going to try the sales tactic of putting my daughter in my pictures. Who can resist that?

Did you happen to weigh the head?

I dont have a small scale to weigh it. I have 2 other heads already made up and waiting to except what ever handle is chosen.

I didnt think it would be necessary to weigh the head. Ebony is very dense (hard and heavy), and it makes for the perfect plane adjusting mallet.

I guess it would be good for tapping in dominoes but deffinately a little light for chisels.

I will go to the post office and weigh one tomorrow.

I have this scale this scale and it works well for how inexpensive it is. 5# capacity ounces or grams with tare function.

The one on the right

Ron, the density of ebony ranges from 960 - 1120 per kg/cubic metre.
That'll give something to do for a minute.

I didnt get to weigh the head but compared it to the HNT mallet today at CraftsmanStudio. I made the heads a bit smaller than the HNT mallets but Bill still liked it and said he would carry one. I think if I make more the heads will be more like 28mm x 28mm x 90-100mm

I was at my favorite store to pick up some Hock blades I got a 1 1/2" for a block plane and a 2" for a Jack. Both I will be making shortly. Im not sure what wood I will be using. Maybe a combination of woods.

Leopardwood sides, Maple body, ebony sole.

Sapele sides, wenge body

maple sides, purple heart body

Cherry with ebony sole

55 or 60 deg bed angle suits the hardwoods I use more than the 45 deg bed which would just tear the heck out of the woods I use.

BTW the HNT plane I have been using and really like will take nice curlies in either direction.

I looked at the bogg spoke shave and picked up the HNT spoke shave due to the higher bed angle on the HNT. Super sweet shave. Too bad the one I got has a defect and will be exchanged tomorrow.

Eiji,

Your link was not working so I took the liberty of fixing it for you.
