Cool never ran into this before

Recently I started a new refinishing project : An old girls make-up vanity/desk While dismantling parts of the left side ( it had been left outside to weather for quite a few years),I kept running into 2-3 sheets of veneer between sections like the top of the main vanity/desk and the raised drawer boxes, between the top of the drawer boxes and the inner walls of the drawer area etc... My question is why would they have them placed there? What purpose do these sheets of veneer do? Are they necessary upon reassembly? Thank you for any help in this matter

Pictures would really help clarify what's going on.

Without pictures, maybe veneer that delaminated from what it was previously glued to?
