I'm proud to say that I remembered that too, Peter. Not bad memories for a couple of old guys.

Also available at Woodcraft

You can see that shaping the bars a little like a caul could be advantageous.

Thanks John and Michael. I should look into those.

And - hey! That's my stomach in the background of John's pic!

See, I told you, you ARE famous. And if it was MY stomach it wouldn't BE in the background.

I liked that clamp setup the minute I saw it at Tyme's, and especially after he showed us the many ways he had used it. I plan to get one just as soon as I have a place to put it.

And, Michael, I'm not sure how using a caul would improve the performance??

Hi,

Woopeckers has a set that is along similar lines, a bit pricey though-

The top and bottom bars are cauls as they are used, just not very effective ones since they give up pressure in the middle of the span. You can see the gap that increases toward the middle in that Woodcraft photo. The problem with using a curved caul in this application is that if the amount of tension each caul applies isn't the same the panel could be forced into an a curve. That's why I suggested making it a "little like a caul". There are alternatives.

How about sandwiching the panels between two pairs of Bowclamps and just using regular bar clamps for the edge to edge pressure?

The Bowclamps should put pretty even force across the surface.

If You want a one does all kind of set up, Bowclamps are the obvious choice.
They'll keep the boards flat during edge glueing, plus they come into their own in cabinet assembly, when You can't get a clamp in the middle of the cabinet.

As far as edge glue-ups goes, these York clamps are the best I've seen. I've been using these for a few years now, and they are solid! and keep the boards nice and flat. They are also easy and fast to use. Anyone doing regular edge glue-ups should have some. They'll soon pay for themselves in time saved, sandpaper, and general frustration, trying to keep 6 boards flat on a table top glue-up.

In a perfect world, I'd have these York clamps and a few Bowclamps for cabinets. If only Bowclamp was available in Japan.
Cheers!

If a guy could modify bowclamps to use these, that might be a pretty hot setup.
