Another alternative is burn-in shellac sticks. After you stain and apply your first coat of finish, use these and scrape smooth; then apply the final coats, sealing them in.

Many years ago, when I was repairing teak veneer, this is what I used and would sometimes blend colors or use a darker color to "grain" the repair with just the long edge of the knife. I got so good that I couldn't find my own repairs!
