The part I like the best while building furniture, is the time when I'm applying the oil finish. Only at that point I will get to see the stunning look of the grain. Before that stage, you can only guess (and hope for the best;))

Anyhow attached you find a couple of samples of very nice looking wood grain after the "oiling" ...

The oil finish on my music stand turned out nice. See my album on my profile. I used Liberon finishing oil.

It's funny... My wife has started to realize the magic that happens when you get that top coat on the wood. It is always fun to see what that first coat of oil will bring out. Given in my case I end up slapping some shellac and a water based clear of some sort on top of it but the oil is the magic ingredient for sure.
