Already got them, thanks Jesse. I had a nice chat with Chuck at the WIA too, quite accidentally.

I have the old ATF55 saw without the Plugit. I confess that I find it annoying - all my other tools are Plugit, and I have to keep bending over to pull the plug out of the CTMini when I switch tools. (Oh, the horror. The horror!) Thanks for the offer of a conversion kit, Paul-Marcel. I actually have one that I bought in France, but have never got around to using on my ATF55 - I keep thinking that maybe I want to exchange it for a TS55. But of course - I haven't. Sigh.

Interesting suggestions, Okamisan. I'll have to think about it. I wonder whether the RO90 is aggressive enough to do seat shaping...?
Peter,

My son was discussing using an angle grinder with some sort of cutter for shaping bowls. He showed it to me when we last visited. It resembled a small chain saw. Since I worked in the woods climbing trees for 5 years, I took one look and told him it was a totally bad idea and extremely dangerous. I found a few internet sites that confirmed what I thought. Now I see that there's another kind of cutter available. Maybe I steered him wrong? Do you get a lot of catching / kickback from that thing?

Mike

Mike, that chain saw gadget is called a Lancelot and I totally agree with you. I had one, used it a couple of times and sold it. Call me a wimp, but it seemed dangerous, was difficult to finesse (often cut too deep), and made a mess that took all day to clean up after. The video posted below shows one in use. Charles Neil really likes his.

The Kutzall in Peter's pic is a rough abrasive device, much safer, but still makes a mess.

I'm taking a break from sculpting chairs until I can do it outside, never would get my shop clean if I used one of those indoors.

I do all my seats outside. Whichever way you do it, it's a messy job. You'll cover your shop with chips and dust.
I don't use the chainsaw cutter either. I use the doughnut type cutter. It's very safe, I've never had any trouble with it.

That Kutzall disk is really easy to use - it never grabs, and it's easy to take very delicate strokes. I've never had a problem with it - except for vast amounts of sawdust...

C'mon guys, this is the 21st century. The only way to shape seats is on a CNC router.

You can make them all day, and every one will be exactly the same.

UUUUU,ohhhhh, wowwwwwww, Fancy.... Someone must have some power somewhere to run that thing. Very nice, MR. 21st Century....
Us folks back here in the hills still rely on spokeshaves, axes and other such tools to hack/cut our seats out with. The Telegraph man said the other day that we might get our first elect-ricity line run into our little town. 'Course it's going to the Mayors office 'cause he said so.......

Wow, John. Where'd you find that? It looks like it takes all the fun out of it!
