At my wit's end, I called my computer guru, Fred West. His suggestion was that since my home office was on the second floor, just open the window and toss the computer out. He was right, I now have a new computer, and the sound works great.

The new machine is running 64 bit Win 7 on an Intel i7-975 3.33 Ghz processor (overclocked to 4 Ghz) and 24 gig of DDR3 memory. This machine is MUCH faster than the old one.
